Gauff and Pegula take another step

Guadalajara, Jalisco, October 20, 2022.- The American couple of Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff, third-seeded for the GDL Open Akron 1000, advanced to the quarterfinals after beating Russian Aliaksandra Sasnovich and Chinese Lin Zhu 7-6 (1) y 7-5.

Gauff and Pegula, who just last weekend won the San Diego Open, showcased the great moment they’re going through, which had already taken them to the WTA Finals.

The American displayed their volleying skills and Gauff had a great net game. She looked comfortable and relaxed, even smiling after the unusual unforced error.

Sasnovich and Zhu were the first to get a break, taking a 5-2 advantage in the first set. But Gauff and Pegula won four games in a row to complete the comeback and force a tiebreak.

Gauff lost her first serve point when she let the ball go by, thinking it was long. That was the only point Sasnovich and Zhu won in the tiebreak, since neither managed to hold her serve.

In the second set, Pegula was the first one to lose her serve, in the fourth game. The Americans broke back in the seventh, when Zhu was serving, and broke her again in the eleventh.

She will be playing for a place in the semifinals against Kazakh Anna Danilina and Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia, who won past American Desirae Krawczyk and Netherland’s Demi Schuurs 3-6, 7-5 y 10-8.

Also advancing to the quarterfinals were Ukrainian Lyudmila Kichenok and Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, who defeated the Czech Linda Fruhvirtova and Estonian Kaia Kanepi 3-6, 6-1, 10-5.

She will face next the top-seeded couple, the Czechs Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova.

The Chinese couple of Yifan Xu and Zhaoxuan Yang also moved on to the final eight by defeating Anastasia Potapova and Yana Sizikova 6-3, 6-3. They will be playing against the Mexican Giuliana Olmos and Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski for a place in the semis.

Earlier today, Australian Storm Sanders and Brazilian Luisa Stefani advance by walkover after the second-seeded couple of Russian Veronika Kudermetova and Belgian Elise Mertens forfeited.
