Coco llega con decisión al GDL Open Akron
Guadalajara, Jalisco, 19 de octubre 2022.- La estadounidense Coco Gauff se apuntó un importante triunfo en su debut en el certamen, al vencer a la italiana Elisabetta Cocciaretto por 7-6 (1) y 6-3 para asegurar su pase a los octavos de final. De paso, confirmó su lugar en las WTA Finals.
“No fue mi mejor tenis la verdad, pero fui capaz de presionarla y ganar, estoy contenta por eso. Estoy emocionada de clasificar a las Finals, no pensaba en eso antes del partido, pero estoy muy feliz, son mis primeras Finals”, comentó Coco, quinta sembrada en Guadalajara. Gauff estará por primera vez en el certamen que reúne a las ocho mejores de la temporada tanto en singles como en dobles, con Jessica Pegula. La derrota previa de Aryna Sabalenka ante Liudmila Samsonova había garantizado un lugar a la estadounidense en las Finals, (al igual que para Caroline Garcia).
La chica dio muestra de por qué, a sus 18 años de edad, se ubica en el top ten mundial, al mostrar calma en los momentos decisivos. Gauff puso su récord contra jugadoras calificadoras en 17-2. Cocciaretto no tiene un solo triunfo contra jugadoras ubicadas en el top 20.
Gauff ocupa actualmente el séptimo lugar de la clasificación WTA, el mejor ranking hasta ahora, lo que la marcaba como favorita contra la italiana. Pero Coco comenzó un poco errática, enviando sus devoluciones largas y en el primer juego sufrió el quiebre de su servicio. Cocciaretto confirmó el rompimiento en el siguiente game y salvó un break point en el cuarto, aunque en el juego 6 Coco generó otra oportunidad para romperle a la italiana y esta vez no falló.
Ambas mantuvieron la paridad en los siguientes juegos, para forzar la definición en el tie break, donde la estadounidense se apuntó tres mini quiebres para llevarse el primer parcial.
La segunda manga fue muy distinta. Cocciaretto cedió su saque en el game inicial y en el quinto. Con 5-3 en el marcador tomó su turno de servicio y tuvo su primer match point, que no capitalizó. Tuvo que esperar hasta el siguiente game, donde en su tercer punto para partido concretó la victoria.
En la siguiente ronda enfrentará a la italiana Martina Trevisan, quien dio cuenta de la checa Katerina Siniakova con parciales de 6-0, 4-6 y 6-3.
También avanzó a los octavos la rusa Anna Kalinskaya, quien en un intenso duelo en el Grandstand Caliente venció a la belga Elise Mertens por 6-4, 0-6 y 7-5.
Y la norteamericana Danielle Collins selló su pase a tercera ronda al imponerse a la polaca Magdalena Frech por 6-3 y 6-4. Ahora buscará el pase a los cuartos de final contra la griega Maria Sakkari.

Coco arrives with determination at the GDL Open Akron
Guadalajara, Jalisco, October 19th, 2022.- American Coco Gauff notched an important win in her debut in the tournament beating Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto 7-6 (1) and 6-3 to secure a spot in the round of 16 and qualified for the WTA Finals.
“It was not my best tennis, to be honest, but I was able to pressure her and get the win. I´m happy for it, I’m excited to qualify for the Finals, I was not thinking about it before the match, that is why I´m so happy. It will be my first Finals”, said Coco, the fifth seed in Guadalajara.
Gauff will be playing for the first time in the tournament that gathers the eight best players in the world, in singles as well as doubles, with Jessica Pegula. The Aryna Sabalenka defeat against Liudmila Samsonova secured her the spot and did it as well for Caroline Garcia.
The American showed why, at 18-years-old, she is ranked in the top 10. Showing calm in decisive moments, Gauff now has a 17-2 record against seeded players. Cocciaretto has not been able to win against players inside the top 20.
Gauff is ranked seventh in the WTA, her best place so far and that is why she was the favorite against the Italian. But Coco started a little bit erratic, and she suffered a break on her first serve. Cocciaretto confirmed the break and avoided a break point in the fourth, but Coco had another one in the sixth and took advantage from it.
Both players were even in the next games to force the tie-break where the American had three mini breaks to win the first set.
The second set was a different one as Cocciaretto gave up her first and fifth serve. With a 5-3 lead, Coco missed on her first match point and had to wait for another game to seal the win.
In the next round, she will play against the Italian Martina Trevisan, who took care of Czech Katerina Siniakova 6-0, 4-6 and 6-3.
Another player who qualified for the round of 16 was Russian Anna Kalinskaya, who had to fight through a tough match against Elise Mertens and got a 6-4, 0-6 and 7-5 victory.
American Danielle Collins also secured a spot in the third round beating Polish Magdalena Frech 6-3 and 6-4. She will try to make it to the quarterfinal round against Maria Sakkari, from Greece.
