La guerrera griega sella su pase a semifinales
Guadalajara, Jalisco, 21 de octubre 2022.- Maria Sakkari sigue su romance en el GDL Open Akron 1000 y ya está en semifinales, luego de vencer en un reñido encuentro a Veronica Kudermetova, y con su triunfo se confirmó como una de las ocho invitadas a las WTA Finals.
En uno de los juegos estelares de la jornada del viernes en el Estadio Akron del Complejo Panamericano de Tenis, Sakkari se impuso a Kudermetova por parciales de 6-1, 5-7 y 6-4 en 2:35 horas, para ubicarse como una de las mejores cuatro del torneo mexicano.
Sakkari, cuarta favorita al título, apareció por tercera vez en el torneo y cada vez con más apoyo de la afición. Considerada una de las jugadoras más regulares en el certamen, siguió su romance con el torneo mexicano y lo demostró con una contundente actuación en el primer set.
Un dominio total ejerció la griega en la primera manga, con mayor efectividad en su servicio y menos equivocaciones. Además, conectó dos aces y rompió el servicio de su rival dos veces para adelantarse 5-0.
Pese a tal desventaja, Kudermetova siguió en pie de lucha, pero sólo le alcanzó para lograr un punto y hacer más decoroso el marcador, pues la número 6 del mundo logró el punto que necesitaba para apuntarse el primer set.
Kudermetova comenzó de mejor forma el segundo parcial, consciente de que había mucho en juego, no sólo el boleto a las semifinales en Zapopan, también el de las Finals que se jugarán del 31 de octubre al 7 de noviembre en Texas.
Así, con entrega y determinación, tuvo buenos momentos y destacados intercambios con Sakkari, lo que les valió ser reconocidas por la afición. Kudermetova le jugó de tú a tú a la favorita, incluso aguantó la presión al verse abajo 0-30 en el séptimo game y quedarse con el punto para adelantarse 4-3.
En ese segundo set concretó una de cinco oportunidades de break y fue suficiente para quedarse igualar el partido y obligar al tercero y definitivo.
Pero Sakkari fue mejor en el último. Concretó la única oportunidad de quiebre que tuvo y salvó cinco oportunidades para tomar la ventaja que fue definitiva, esa que la tiene en semifinales en Zapopan y clasificada a las Finals. Kudermetova, quien solo concretó una de 15 oportunidades de break en el partido, perdió su tercer partido en fila con Sakkari en cuatro enfrentamientos.

Guadalajara, Jalisco, October 21st, 2022.- Maria Sakkari continues her romance with the GDL Open Akron 1000 advancing to the semifinals by defeating Veronika Kudermetova and securing her place as one of the 8 players in the WTA Finals at the end of the season.
In one of the prime matches of the fifth day of play in Estadio Akron at the Pan-American Tennis Complex, Sakkari beat Kudermetova 6-1, 5-7 y 6-4 in 2:35 hours to move on one step closer to the final.
The fourth-seeded Sakkari played for the third time in the tournament gaining more fans with every match. She is considered one of the most consistent players and continued her romance with the Mexican tournament with a dominant first set.
Sakkari completely obliterated her rival in the first set, with a higher serve percentage and fewer errors. In addition, she hit two aces and broke twice to go up 5-0.
Despite falling in a deep hole, Kudermetova kept fighting but she only managed a point to avoid the shutout, since Sakkari closed out the first set with her service.
The Russian had a better start of the second set, aware of the stakes, since they weren’t just playing for a place in the semifinals here in Guadalajara but for a ticket to the Finals in Fort Worth, Texas, next month.
So, with total determination she held her own with long rallies against Sakkari, drawing a huge ovation from the crowd.
Kudermetova went heat-to-head with Sakkari and she even came back from being down 0-30 in the seventh game to win the point and take a 4-3 lead. During the second set she managed to break once in five chances to tie the match one set a piece and force a third.
But Sakkari prevailed in the third. She broke on her only chance and survived five break points to take a definite lead, enough to move on to the semis and punch her ticket to Texas. Kudermetova just broke once in 15 opportunities and lost for the third straight time in four career meetings against Sakkari.
