Después del éxito que tuvo el GDL Open Akron 1000, al cumplir con las exigencias que se le marcaron para llevar a cabo el evento y tener excelentes comentarios de parte de las jugadoras, la WTA, Octagon y los aficionados, la organización está a la espera del calendario 2023 que se anunciará la siguientes semanas, y confía en asegurar la fecha.
Gustavo Santoscoy, director del torneo, está muy confiado de que el WTA 1000 se quede en Guadalajara después de los resultados obtenidos en esta primera edición.
“Obviamente queremos quedarnos con el WTA 1000, estamos en pláticas desde hace tiempo, no solamente estos días. Esperemos esta semana que se va a dar a conocer el nuevo calendario, tenemos muchas ilusiones de estar, las jugadoras están felices y lo han dicho, que estamos arriba de otros torneos. Hay confianza en que vamos a lograr el objetivo y podamos permanecer el año que entra, todo indica que nos va a favorecer un poquito la organización, el público, los medios y las jugadoras”.
Santoscoy resaltó su satisfacción por haber cumplido con las exigencias para realizar el torneo, como habilitar dos canchas más, crecer las tribunas, más baños, más áreas de descanso, un comedor para al menos 200 personas y otros aspectos, aunque admitió que hay áreas de oportunidad, como la infraestructura en general del torneo, con espacios específicos para cada área.
A lo largo de la semana el certamen ha registrado una asistencia de más de 90 mil asistentes. “Estamos hablando de 80 o 90 mil personas (hasta el sábado), con la entrada de hoy podemos llegar a la cantidad estimada de personas que estábamos esperando en la asistencia. (En lo económico) estamos arriba por lo menos un 50% de la derrama económica (comparado con las WTA Finals), estamos calculando arriba de 1,200 millones de pesos, ese es el pronóstico”.
El director del torneo admitió que sigue impresionado por el vertiginoso crecimiento que han tenido los torneos en Guadalajara en menos de cinco años, porque fue en 2018 cuando les autorizaron el primer WTA 125, que se realizó en 2019, rápidamente pasó a un 250 y el año pasado se pudieron hacer las Finals y ahora un WTA 1000. Y aunque le dijeron que tener un torneo de esta categoría era cosa de locos, ahí están los resultados.
“Así empezó este sueño, estábamos decididos a crecer, hacer cosas diferentes y fue tan rápido que en menos de 11 meses hemos hecho un 250, unas Finals y un 1000, lo que ninguna otra organización del tenis, y siempre estamos pensando en cómo hacer las cosas mejor. Acabando las Finals dije ‘quiero un 1000’ y me dijeron que era cosa de locos, y dije ‘pues estamos locos’ y hoy lo tenemos”.
Todo alrededor del torneo marcha de la mejor manera, reiteró Santoscoy, lo que ha ocurrido gracias al apoyo del Gobierno de Jalisco, de los municipios, la Secretaría de Turismo, los patrocinadores, la iniciativa privada, Cámara de Comercio, aficionados, jugadoras, prensa y voluntarios.
”Las jugadoras son un aliado tremendo para nosotros porque se divierten, están muy agradecidas, son nuestras aliadas y nuestras compañeras de éxito de que esto puede suceder”.
Lo que dejó claro es que es un esfuerzo de muchos años que nada ni nadie detendrá, y él, una persona muy inquieta, seguirá luchando desde cualquier trinchera por el tenis, pero con mucha confianza de que el WTA 1000 seguirá por muchos años.
“El balón ya corrió y pararlo va a ser muy difícil, hemos logrado mucho y sería un retroceso total parar lo que hemos conseguido, y lo vamos a seguir haciendo desde donde estemos. Vamos a ver qué sigue en el futuro”.
Santoscoy trusts that the WTA 1000 remains in Guadalajara
After successfully hosting the GDL Open Akron 1000, meeting the demands that were set to carry on the event and having positive feedback from the players, the WTA, and the fans, the organizers are waiting the 2023 schedule to be released in the upcoming weeks trusting to secure the date.
Gustavo Santoscoy, the tournament director, is highly confident that the WTA 1000 remains in Guadalajara after the results obtained in the first edition.
“Obviously we want to keep the WTA 1000, we´ve been having conversations for a while, not just the past few days. We hope that this week the new schedule will be announced, and we have high illusions to be on it, the players are happy, and they have expressed it, that we are above other tournaments. There´s trust that we will reach the goal and that we will remain on the calendar for next year, everything points out that we are going to have in favor the organization, the crowd, the media, and the players”.
Santoscoy highlighted his satisfaction in meeting the demands to host the tournament, among them having two extra courts, expand the stands, having more bathrooms, more rest areas and dining room for at least 200 people, among other things, but acknowledged that there still areas of opportunity like the overall infrastructure of the tournament, like specific spaces for each area.
Through the week, the tournament has registered an attendance of more than 90 thousand fans.
“We are talking about 80 or 90 thousand people (until Saturday), with today´s assistance we can reach the estimated amount of people that we were hoping to get as attendance. (On the economic) we are above 50% of the economic spill (compared to the WTA Finals), and we are calculating over 1,200 million pesos in revenue, that is the forecast”.
The tournament director acknowledged being impressed by the dizzying growth of the tournaments in Guadalajara in less than five years because in 2018 when they were authorized the first WTA 125 that as held in 2019, and then quickly it became a 250 and last year they could host the WTA Finals and now a WTA 1000. And although some people said that it was crazy to host a tournament of the category, now the results speak for themselves.
“That´s how this dream started, we were decided to grow, to make things different and it was so quick that in less than 11 months we have hosted a 250, a Finals and 1000, something no other organization in tennis has been capable of, and we are always thinking how to improve. At the end of the WTA Finals, I said, “I want a 1000” and they told me that it was crazy, and I said ‘well, we a little crazy’ and now we have it”.
Everything around the tournament is running smoothly, said Santoscoy, something that has happened thanks to the support of the state of Jalisco Government, the municipality, the Tourism Secretary, the sponsors, private initiative, the Commerce Chamber, fans, players, media, and volunteers”.
” All of the players are a tremendous ally for us because they are having fun, they are thankful and are our allies and partners in making a success out of this”.
What he made very clear is that it´s an effort of many years and that nothing or nobody is going to stop it. And that he is a very relentless person that is going to keep fighting for tennis but trusting that the WTA 1000 will remain in Guadalajara for years to come.
“The ball is rolling and it´s going to be hard to be stopped, we have achieved so much, and it will be a step back to stop what we have achieved and something that we will continue to do wherever we are. Let´s see what comes up next for the future”.
