“Gugu” Olmos motivada por volver a casa
Guadalajara, Jalisco, 17 de octubre.- Giuliana Olmos vive sin duda el mejor momento de su carrera deportiva, pero quiere mucho más. La jugadora mexicana nacida en Austria, pero de padre sinaloense, ha saboreado lo que significa ganar títulos en diferentes categorías del tour profesional, sin embargo, le falta el más importante, un Grand Slam.
En su haber tiene cinco títulos de dobles, Nottingham 2019, Acapulco 2020, Roma 2021, Madrid 2022 y Tokio 2022, además de una final en el US Open en la modalidad mixta junto a Marcelo Arévalo, pero aún debe dar el salto que falta para conquistar un torneo Major. “Es algo muy grande, muy difícil, pero ahora sé que lo puedo hacer, ya llegué a una final, sé cómo que se siente y espero el año que entra tener la oportunidad de jugar por un título”, aseguró Giuliana.
Gracias a la gran temporada que ha realizado este año junto a la canadiense Gabriela Dabrowski, llegando a cuatro finales y a los cuartos de final del US Open, “Gugu” pudo hacer historia para convertirse en la primera mexicana en el top 10 del ranking mundial de dobles, donde actualmente ocupa el séptimo sitio.
Apenas el domingo, la dupla GG disputó la final del WTA 500 de San Diego, y aunque sucumbieron ante Coco Gauff y Jessica Pegula, lograron ascender, al primer sitio de la clasificación de parejas en la carrera rumbo a las Finals Texas 2022, donde ya tienen un lugar asegurado.
Giuliana de 29 años, reconoce que aunque ésta ha sido su mejor campaña con dos campeonatos, su consolidación fue el año anterior al poder jugar los Olímpicos de Tokio, la final mixta del US Open y ganar el Abierto de Roma, lo que le dio mucha experiencia y confianza de poder jugar de tú a tú con las mejores del mundo, lo que ha podido capitalizar en esta temporada.
“Una de mis metas para este año era estar entre las primeras 10, estoy muy orgullosa de haberlo logrado, pero me gustaría cerrar entre las mejores cinco, aún me quedan varios torneos para ganar puntos, el WTA 1000 de Guadalajara, el 250 de Tampico y las Finals que serán en Forth Worth”.
En 2021, Giuliana jugó dos veces en Guadalajara, primero teniendo como compañera a la estadounidense Desirae Krawczyk, con quien llegó a la final del
Abierto de Zapopan, y luego en las WTA Finals en equipo con la canadiense Sharon Fichman, quedándose en la fase de grupos.
“Me encanta jugar en Guadalajara, no siento presión, me siento como en casa con estadio lleno y todo el apoyo del público. Espero que ahora nos vaya mejor, llego con más motivación y con más experiencia; el año pasado mi pareja estaba un poco lesionada, pero este año Gaby está bien, no quiero asegurar que vamos a ganar, solo quiero disfrutarlo y buscar cerrar la temporada con una buena nota”, apuntó Olmos que recientemente también jugó un torneo ITF en Rancho Santa Fe, California, en el que llegó a semifinales en pareja con la potosina Marcela Zacarías.
El segundo semestre para la dupla Giuliana y Gabriela ha resultado muy bueno después de su participación en Wimbledon, pues han jugado seis torneos y en todos han llegado por lo menos a la ronda de cuartos de final.
En el Open Guadalajara Akron 1000, la dupla méxico-canadiense será cuarta en la siembra y tendrán actividad hasta la segunda ronda, ya que debido a su status, avanzaron bye.
“Gugu” Olmos motivated to come home
Guadalajara, Jalisco, October 17th.- Giuliana Olmos is living the best moment of her sporting career, but she wants to do so much more. The Mexican player born in Austria, but from a father from Sinaloa, has tasted what it means to win titles in different categories of the professional tour, however she is missing the biggest one: a Grand Slam.
Olmos owns five doubles titles: Nottingham 2019, Acapulco 2020, Roma 2021, Madrid 2022 and Tokyo 2022, besides a US Open final in mixed couples alongside Marcelo Arevalo, but she still has to make the big jump to win over a major tournament.
“It´s something big, very hard, but now I know that it can be done, I already made it to a final, I know how it feels and I hope to have the chance next year to play for a title”, said Giuliana.
Thanks to her great season playing with Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski, reaching four finals and the quarterfinal round of the US Open, “Gugu” made history becoming the first Mexican to reach the top10 spot in the world ranking for doubles, where she currently is ranked seventh.
Just last Sunday, the GG couple played in the final of the WTA 500 in San Diego and even though they lost to Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula, they managed to reach the top spot for the doubles qualification for the Finals in Texas 2022, where their spot is secured.
The 29-year-old Giuliana, acknowledged that, even though this has been her best season with two titles, her most remarkable year was in 2021 when she was able to play in the Tokyo Olympics, the mixed couples final in the US Open and by winning the Roma Open, which have her plenty of confidence knowing that she could go toe-to-toe with the best in the world, something that she has been able to use this season.
“One of my goals this year was to be among the top10 players and I´m very proud to reach it, but I want to be amongst the best five, I still have some tournaments to win points, the WTA 1000 in Guadalajara, the 250 in Tampico and the Finals in Forth Worth”.
In 2021, Giuliana played twice in Guadalajara, first having American Desirae Krawczyk as a teammate and they reach the final of the Abierto de Zapopan and then in the WTA Finals she played with Canadian Sharon Fichman, but they did not make it out of the group stage.
“I love to play in Guadalajara, I don´t feel the pressure, I feel like I´m at home with the stadium full and all the support from the crowd. I hole I can do better now, I´m more motivated and more experienced, a year ago my couple was a little bit injured, but this year Gaby is fine, I don´t want to assure that we are going to win it, I just want to enjoy and try to close the season on a good note”, said Olmos, ho recently played an ITF tournament in Rancho Santa Fe, California, where she made it to the semifinal playing alongside fellow Mexican Marcela Zacarias.
The second semester has for Giuliana and Gabriela has been very good. After playing in Wimbledon, they have competed in six tournaments and made it, at least, to the quarterfinals.
In the Open Guadalajara Akron 1000, the Mexican-Canadian couple will be the fourth seed and will play until the second round because they received a bye for their status.
