A dramatic win for Pegula against the Wimbledon champion

Guadalajara, Jalisco, October 19th, 2022.- Third-seeded American Jessica Pegula survived three match points to eliminate Kazakh Elena Rybakina in a thrilling match and move on to the final 16 of the GDL Open Akron 1000.

Neither player was at his most accurate level over the 2:05 hours of the exciting match. Rybakina had the most winners, 29-11, but she also committed more unforced errors 59-35.

Rybakina, reigning Wimbledon champion, had a great start, breaking twice in her way to taking the first set after just 28 minutes.

The second set was the complete opposite and the American took up a notch behind her low shots and her slice. She won 100% of the points played with her first serve and broke twice to send the match to a decisive third set.

The last set was as even as it can be. Both players broke once, and the tied score prevailed until the tiebreak.

There, Rybakina had a couple of match points at 6-4, but couldn’t convert either. She wasted another one on 7-6. That was about it. Unlike the Kazakh, Pegula was unforgiving and capitalized on her first match point when her rival barely missed with her forehand and a loud celebration ensued.

“They love shouting my name. It’s amazing. They were super excited, and they were a great support today. So, it was great seeing the fans cheering on. It is my first time here in a long time, since I was in juniors, so this support really means a lot”, said the top-ranked American.

Pegula took her time to explain her loud celebration at the end of the match.

“I saved match points. That was an unwanted challenge. I feel a little bad for such a big celebration but, at the same time, it was needed because it is a big stress relief at that moment. I fought and I came back. I wasn’t feeling well, I just had a day and a half before coming here, and I was playing in the second round against a tough player. I mean, I played against the Wimbledon champ. It’s madness. So, for me, I think, I was leaving behind a mental struggle, sort of a liberation”.

For the 24-ranked Rybakina, her 14 aces didn’t help, although she leads all the WTA with 370 unreturned services this season.

Pegula, world’s No. 5 and runner up in the WTA 1000 in Madrid a few months ago, has already secured her place in the Finals 2022 in Fort Worth, Texas.

Having already a title under her belt, Washington 2019, and after playing the semis of the San Diego Open, Pegula will play next against Canadian Bianca Andreescu, who watched the game from the press box alongside her coach Sven Groeneveld and the rest of her team.

In other second round results, Russian Veronika Kudermetova, who is aiming to punch her ticket to the WTA finals, took care of the Croatian Donna Vekic 6-4, 7-5 and will face Latvian Jelena Ostapenko for a place in the final 8.
