Cuatro sembradas jugarán en los cuartos de final del GDL Open
Guadalajara, Jalisco, 20 de octubre 2022.- Tres jugadoras de los Estados Unidos, dos de Rusia, una de Bielorrusia, una de la República Checa y una de Grecia, son las ocho tenistas con vida en el GDL Open Akron 1000, que este viernes definirán los duelos de semifinales.
La jornada de cuartos de final comenzará en el estadio Akron en punto de las 14:00 horas con el partido entre la bielorrusa Victoria Azarenka y la sembrada número 5, Coco Gauff de Estados unidos.
La joven norteamericana de 18 años enfrentará por primera ocasión en su carrera a la veterana de 37, exnúmero uno del mundo y doble campeona de Australia, que está jugando en forma brillante en el torneo jalisciense. Gauff, 7 del ranking mundial, ya tiene asegurado su lugar en las WTA Finals tanto en singles como en dobles, por lo que sin presión alguna está en busca de su tercer título profesional.
Al terminar, toca el turno a un partido entre jugadoras estadounidenses, Jessica Pegula, tercera sembrada, ante Sloan Stephens, campeona del Abierto de Zapopan en este mismo escenario en el mes de febrero. En el frente a frente, la jugadora de Buffalo, número 5 del mundo, va por su tercera victoria sobre Stephens a la que ha ganado en sus dos enfrentamientos previos, en los WTA 1000 de Miami 2022 y Miami 2021. Pegula también ya aseguró presencia en las Finals de Texas, mientras que Stephens, 50 de la clasificación y campeona del US Open 2017, intenta regresar a los primeros planos que la llevaron al número tres del ranking que ocupó en 2018.
En el turno nocturno, la griega María Sakkari, sembrada 4 y 7 del mundo, enfrentará a la rusa Veronika Kudermetova, octava preclasificada y 12 del ranking, quienes se han visto las caras en tres ocasiones, con ventaja de la jugadora helénica 2-1. Este año jugaron en la tercera ronda del Australian Open con triunfo de Sakkari, que también se impuso en segunda ronda del torneo de Montreal 2021. La única vez que ganó Kudermetova fue en Estambul 2019. Ambas tienen solo un título en su carrera profesional, María se coronó en Rabat 2019 y Veronika lo hizo en Charleston 2021.
En el duelo que define la última semifinalista, la checa Marie Bouzkova tendrá como rival a la rusa Anna Kalinskaya, la jugadora con el ranking más bajo de las cuartofinalistas, al ubicarse en el peldaño 73. Bouzkova, subcampeona de Zapopan, ganó la única vez que estuvieron frente a frente en la primera ronda del torneo de Cincinnati. La checa que es 38 de la clasificación mundial, tiene romance con los torneos mexicanos, pero no ha podido coronarse. Fue finalista en Guadalajara 2022 y Monterrey 2020. A sus 24 años, Bouzkova por fin pudo ganar su primer título esta temporada en el torneo de Praga. Por su parte, la rusa de 23 años, aún está en busca de su primera corona en el tour femenil.
Four seeds will play in the GDL Open quarterfinals
Guadalajara, Jalisco, October 20, 2022.- Three players from the United States, two from Russia, one from Belarus, one from the Czech Republic and one from Greece are the eight players who remain in contention for the GDL Open Akron 1000 title, that on Friday will define the semifinal matches.
The quarterfinals will start at estadio Akron a 14:00 hours Sharp when Belarus Victoria Azarenka plays against the fifth seed Coco Gauff, from the USA.
The 18-year-old American will face the 37-year-old veteran and former one player in the world as well as two-time Australian champion, who is having a brilliant performance in the tournament. Gauff, seventh in the world rankings, has secured a spot in the WTA Finals in singles and in doubles and her only pressure is trying to win her third professional title.
At the end of it, the turn will be for a match between Americans, Jessica Pegula, the third seed against Sloane Stephens, the Zapopan Open champion earlier this year at the same stage. On the head-to-head, the player from Buffalo and fifth in the world will be aiming for her third straight win over Stephens. She beat her in WTA 1000 in Miami in 2022 and Miami in 2021.
Pegula also has qualified for the Finals in Texas, while Stephens, 50th in the rankings and 2017 US Open champion will try to return to the level that made the third best player in the world back in 2018.
On the night shift, the turn will be for Greek María Sakkari, the fourth seed and seventh in the rankings taking on Russian Veronika Kudermetova, the eight in the seed and ranked 12th. They have played each other three times and the Hellenic player leads the series 2-1.
This year they played in the third round of the Australian Open when Sakkari prevailed. The Greek also got the upper hand in Montreal 2021. Kudermetova´s only win against Sakkari was in Istanbul 2019.
Both players have just one career title. Maria won the title in Rabat 2019 while Veronika won in Charleston 2021.
In the match that will define the last semifinalist, Czech Marie Bouzkova will be playing against Russian Anna Kalinskaya, the lowest ranked player among the quarterfinalists at 73.
Bouzkova, the runner-up in Zapopan, won their previous and only match when they met in Cincinnati. The Czech, who is 38th in the world rankings, plays very well on Mexican soil but she has not been able to win a title. She made it to the final in Zapopan 2020 and Monterrey 2020. The 24-year-old Bouzkova won her first title this season in Prague. Meanwhile, the 23-year-old Russian remains on the hunt for her first crown on the Women´s tour.
