Caroline García perdonó y fue eliminada por Sloane Stephens
Guadalajara, Jalisco, 20 de octubre 2022.- La estadounidense Sloane Stephens volvió a demostrar que Zapopan es su casa y venció a la francesa Caroline Garcia para meterse a los cuartos de final del GDL Open Akron 1000, donde enfrentará a la también norteamericana Jessica Pegula.
Stephens superó a la sexta de las preferencias por parciales de 7-6 (6) y 7-5 para meterse a la ronda de las mejores ocho tenistas del torneo, luego de 1:42 horas de actividad en el Grad Stand Caliente.
Caroline García, con gran experiencia en juegos contra Sloane, parecía tenerle tomada la medida, pues le había ganado en 4 de 5 enfrentamientos, incluidos los tres últimos. Le rompió el servicio y tomó ventaja 3-0 sobre la estadounidense, quien tuvo que remar contracorriente.
Cuando la francesa servía para sentenciar la primera manga, Stephens lo evitó y logró un break que le dio vida, mismo que le permitió acercarse 4-5 y con su saque igualó el partido.
Tuvieron que definir el primer set en tie break y la número 10 del mundo parecía enfilarse al triunfo, pues tomó una cómoda ventaja 5-0 y estuvo 6-3, pero llegó la remontada de Sloane, quien se quedó con los siguientes 5 puntos para agenciarse la primera manga y provocar la frustración y enojo de la francesa, que azotó su raqueta.
La situación no mejoró para García en el inicio de la segunda, pues Sloane le rompió el servicio y aprovechó su saque para adelantarse 3-0. García lucia errática, su golpeo no era el acostumbrado y eso lo aprovechó Sloane.
Aunque Garcia se acercó 3-1, Stephens recuperó el control del partido y dejó en cero a García, quien estrelló un par de pelotas en la red y no parecía cómoda en la cancha. Pero la afición la motivó y se acercó 4-3, con break incluido, y después alcanzó a Sloane 4-4.
Con ventaja 40-15 en el duodécimo game del segundo set, Caroline tuvo tres puntos para obligar a la muerte súbita, pero falló; Stephens remontó una vez más y logró el rompimiento que le dio el triunfo y el boleto a cuartos de final, donde enfrentará a Pegula, quien ha ganado las únicas dos veces que se han encontrado.
En otro encuentro que se realizó en la misma cancha, la checa Marie Bouzkova se recuperó luego de ser barrida en el primer set para ganar por 0-6, 7-5 y 6-3, en 2:25 horas de juego, y así clasificarse a los cuartos de final, donde espera rival que saldrá del juego entre Anna Kalinskaya y la séptima favorita, Daria Kasatkina

Guadalajara, Jalisco, October 20th, 2022.- American Sloane Stephens showed once again that Zapopan is like her home and took down Caroline Garcia to reach the quarterfinals of the GDL Open Akron 1000, where she is going to take on her countrywoman Jessica Pegula.
Stephens defeated the sixth seeded 7-6 (6) and 7-5 to punch her ticket into the round of the final eighth in the tournament after 1:42 of play in Grad Stand Caliente.
Caroline García, with a lot of experience in games against Sloane, seemed to have her controlled winning four of their five career meetings, including their last three. She broke the serve and took a 3-0 lead over the American who had to pull a comeback.
When the French was serving to secure the first set, Stephens stayed alive with a break and inched closer 4-5 just to tie it with her serve.
The first set went into a tie-break when the 10th ranked player in the world looked on her way to victory with a 5-0 and then a 6-3 lead, but Stephens rallied to win five straight points and took the first set against Garcia, who smashed her racquet in frustration.
Things did not get better for Garcia early in the second set when Sloane broke her serve and then pulled ahead 3-0. Garcia looked erratic and missed several shots and Sloane took advantage of the situation.
Even though Garcia got close 3-1, Stephens regained control of the match that was even 4-4.
Leading 40-15 in the 12th game of the second set, Caroline had three points to force the sudden death but missed it and Stephens rallied again to get a break and secured the win and a ticket to the quarterfinals where she will face Pegula, who has beaten her twice in their meetings.
In other game, Czech Marie Bouzkova rallied after losing in the first set and defeated Liudmila Samsonova 0-6, 7-5 and 6-3 in 2:25 to reach the quarterfinals where she is going to play the winner of the match between Anna Kalinskaya and he seventh seeded Daria Kasatkina.
