Tomljanovic “rompe el corazón” de Fernanda Contreras
Guadalajara, Jalisco, 17 de octubre 2022.- La mexicana Fernanda Contreras tuvo una amarga presentación en el GDL Open Akron 1000. Ante su público y en su estreno en un certamen de esta categoría, Fernanda cayó en el duelo contra la australiana Ajla Tomljanovic por 2-6 y 1-6.
Antes de su participación Contreras mencionó que jugaría con mucho corazón y mente clara, pero esta noche eso no fue suficiente.
“La verdad me encantó estar aquí, el resultado no es lo que esperaba, pero tener al público que me gritaba… sigo sonriendo. Hoy me fallaron algunas derechas, tal vez hubiera sido un poco más reñido, ella es una persona muy fuerte, ojalá que le siga yendo muy bien. Ahora a seguir trabajando, es lo más importante, pero si hace dos años me hubieras dicho que iba a estar jugando un 1000 en México no me la hubiera creído. Poder jugar con estas jugadoras a este nivel te hace aprender”, dijo Fernanda después del partido.
Tomljanovic sacó provecho de su mayor experiencia e impuso sus condiciones sobre la mexicana. Este duelo fue el número 69 para Ajla en torneos 1000, en 41 participaciones. Para Fernanda representaba su primera vez.
La australiana controló las acciones y llevó a la mexicana a cometer muchos errores no forzados. Por momentos Contreras lució ansiosa, aunque a la vez trataba de darse ánimo, cerrando el puño y hablando consigo misma.
Tomljanovic generó dos oportunidades de quiebre en el primer turno de servicio de Fernanda, el segundo game del partido. Pero Contreras se los quitó de encima para evitar ponerse debajo tan temprano.
El primer rompimiento llegó para Ajla en el sexto juego, y lo confirmó en el siguiente.
Fernanda se volvió a meter en problemas en el octavo juego, con una seguidilla de errores que la puso 0-40. Y aunque logró la igualdad, Tomljanovic se puso en ventaja y en 35 minutos se quedó con el primer parcial.
La afición trataba de impulsar a Contreras, con gritos de ¡vamos Fernanda! ¡tú puedes! En un intento de ver una reacción de la local.
Para la segunda manga, Tomljanovic se puso en ventaja al sostener su saque, y en el segundo game Contreras cometió una doble falta para darle la oportunidad de quiebre a su rival. Ajla devolvió una bola a la línea lateral que fue cantada fuera, la australiana pidió el challenge y se confirmó que la pelota había picado dentro, para confirmar el quiebre, y luego de apuntarse otro quiebre en el sexto, se puso 1-5.
Ajla cerró el duelo con un tiro ganador en su primer match point, causando la desilusión de los aficionados, quienes a pesar de todo brindaron aplausos a Fernanda.

Tomljanovic “breaks the heart” of Fernanda Contreras
Guadalajara, Jalisco, October 17th 2022.- Mexican Fernanda Contreras had a bitter presentation at the GDL Open Akron 1000. Before her home crowd and in her debut in the tournament she lost against Australian Ajla Tomljanovic 2-6 and 1-6.
Ahead of her debut, Contreras said that she was going to play with a lot of heart and a clear mind, but tonight, that was not enough.
“The truth is that I loved being here, the outcome is not what I expected, but having the crowd cheering…I´m still smiling. Today I missed on some forehands, and maybe it could have been more contested, but she is still a strong player, I wish her well. Now let´s get back to work, that´s the most important thing. If two years ago you have told me that I would be playing in a 1000 tournament in Mexico, I could not have believed it. Being able to play against these players at this level is a learning experience”, said Fernanda after the match.
Tomljanovic took advantage of her experience and set the conditions over the Mexican. The match was the 69th for Ajla in 1000 tournaments, in 41 appearances. For Fernanda, it was her first one.
The Australian controlled the pace and forced the Mexican to make unforced errors. At times, Contreras seemed anxious and try to remain steady clinching her fist and talking to herself.
Tomljanovic had to breaking chances in Fernanda´s first serve in the second game of the match, but Contreras avoided them.
The first break for Ajla was in the sixth game and then in the next one as Tomljanovic took the lead and in 35 minutes won the first set.
The Mexican fans tried to give Fernanda a boost with screams ‘let´s go Fernanda, you can do it’ on an attempt to have a reaction from the local player.
In the second set, Tomljanovic took the lead by holding her serve and in the second game Contreras made a double fault to give her opponent a chance to break her.
The Australian had another break in the sixth game to take a 5-1 lead and closed the match with a winner in her first match point sending the local fans disappointed, but still some of them cheered for Fernanda.
