Guadalajara, Jalisco, 23 de octubre.- La australiana Storm Sanders y la brasileña Luisa Stefani inscribieron sus nombres con letras doradas en la primera página del libro del GDL Open Akron. La sudamericana y la oceánica se impusieron en tres sets a la kazaja Anna Danilina y la brasileña Beatriz Haddad Maia por 7-6 (4), 6-7 (2) y 10-8 para convertirse en las campeonas del primer certamen de categoría 1000 en América Latina.
Sanders y Stefani venían de llegar a los cuartos de final la semana pasada en San Diego, aunque no eran favoritas, ya que sus rivales ya están clasificadas a las WTA Finals en dobles, que reúne a las ocho mejores de la temporada.
Pero esta noche Storm y Luisa se mostraron como dignas rivales, se plantaron en la cancha convencidas de que podían levantar el título y lo consiguieron. Es el primer trofeo de la categoría para ambas, que ya ganaron en otros torneos, pero con parejas distintas.
Luisa felicitó a su compatriota por la clasificación a las Finals y le dijo que era una gran inspiración para las tenistas en Brasil, además de agradecer a su pareja. “Storm, gracias por darme la oportunidad estas dos semanas, por confiar en mí, porque tuve altos y bajos, muchas gracias”, añadió.
Haddad Maia y Danilina este año habían ganado el torneo de Sydney, llegaron a la final en el Abierto de Australia e hicieron semifinales en Ostrava.
“Me gustaría felicitar a Luisa especialmente, porque esto significa mucho para Brasil, inspiras a muchas chicas. Creo que nosotras hoy no jugamos nuestro mejor tenis. Dedico este trofeo a una persona de mi familia, sería muy injusto decir que estoy triste, porque la vida es muy linda, se lo dedico a mi tío, que está pasando momentos duros”, dijo Beatriz después de recibir su trofeo de finalista.
En el primer set, con el marcador 3-3 hubo cuatro rompimientos en fila y tuvieron que definirlo en el tie break, que fue para Sanders y Stefani luego de 51 minutos de juego. Sanders encontró los huecos en el callejón para definir puntos importantes durante todo el partido.
Para la segunda manga el primer quiebre se lo apuntaron Haddad Maia y Danilina, pero sus rivales lo recuperaron en el juego cuatro y nuevamente fue necesario definir en tie break, donde Beatriz y Anna tomaron una cómoda ventaja de 6-1 y forzaron a un tercer set.
En el super tie break, con ventaja de 8-7 en el marcador Haddad Maia vino a servir para cerrar el encuentro si aseguraba sus saques, pero sufrió dos miniquiebres y Sanders no falló en su primer match point.
Por el título las campeonas sumaron 900 puntos y ganaron 120 mil dólares, mientras que las finalistas se apuntaron 585 puntos y 67 mil 630 dólares
Stefani and Sanders claim the doubles title
Guadalajara, Jalisco, October 23rd, 2022.- Australian Storm Sanders and her Brazilian partner Luisa Stefani wrote their names with golden letters in the first page of the GDL Open Akron book. Sanders and Stefani defeated Kazakh Anna Danilina and Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia 7-6 (4), 6-7 (2) y 10-8 to become the first couple to win the title of the first WTA 1000 event held in Latin America.
Sanders and Stefani, who reached the quarterfinals last week in San Diego, came in as underdogs against their rivals, who advanced to the WTA Finals as one of the best eight couples of the season.
But on Sunday Storm and Luisa proved their worth and jumped to the court and never faltered in their belief of winning the title. Is the first title at a 1000 event for both, who had previously won other tournaments but with different partners.
Luisa, who congratulated her fellow Brazilian for advancing to the Finals saying she is a great inspiration for Brazilian players, also took time to thank her partner.

Haddad Maia and Danilina had previously won this year at Sydney and made finals in the Australian Open and semis in Ostrava.
“I’d like to specially congratulate Luisa, because this means so much for Brazil, you are inspiring a lot of girls. I think we didn’t play our best tennis today. This trophy is for one person in my family, it would be unfair to say I’m sad, because life is so nice, this is for my uncle who is going through difficult times”, said Beatriz after receiving her runner-up trophy.
With the score tied 3-3 in the first set, there were four consecutive breaks, and the set was decided in a tiebreak after 51 minutes. Sanders found openings in the alley during the big points throughout the match.
The first break of the second set was for Haddad Maia and Danilina, but their rivals recovered it in the fourth game, sending the match to another tiebreak. There, Beatriz and Anna cruised to a 6-1 lead to tie the match.
The match went to a super tiebreak and Haddad Maia came to serve up 8-7 and close the match, but she lost both points with her service and Sanders didn’t miss on her first match point.
The champions earned 900 points and 120.000 dollars, while the runner ups ended with 585 points and 67,630 dollars.
