Sloane Stephens camina firme en el GDL Open Akron 1000

Guadalajara, Jalisco, 19 de octubre 2022.- La estadounidense Sloane Stephens conoce a la perfección las canchas del Complejo Panamericano de Tenis y lo demostró una vez más, pues venció a la suiza Belinda Bencic y se clasificó a los octavos de final del GDL Open Akron 1000, donde enfrentará a la francesa Caroline García.

En uno de los duelos estelares de la jornada del miércoles en el Estadio Akron, Stephens venció a Bencic por parciales de 6-4 y 6-4 en 1:29 horas, y así meterse a la ronda de las mejores 16 tenistas del torneo que se realiza por primera vez en México.

Ambas tenistas tuvieron un rompimiento en el inicio del partido que fue muy igualado, pero Stephens aprovechó en el séptimo game y logró su segundo break del encuentro en el mismo número de oportunidades para tomar ventaja 4-3.

La tenista estadounidense, quien hace unos meses se coronó en estas mismas canchas en el Abierto Akron Zapopan, mantuvo su servicio y, con sus potentes y precisos impactos, concretó la ventaja para llevarse el primer set ante una rival complicada y que también tenía el apoyo de un sector de la afición.

En la segunda manga las cosas parecían comenzar de la mejor manera para Stephens, pues tomó ventaja con un break, pero la suiza reaccionó de inmediato para igualar el juego y parecía motivada, incluso logró un drop shot que arrancó los aplausos de una tribuna cada vez más nutrida.

El partido se mantuvo nivelado, pero en el séptimo “game” Bencic cometió una doble falta para que Stephens concretara otro rompimiento, ventaja que confirmó luego de adelantarse 40-0 en el octavo, y minutos después aseguró su presencia en la tercera ronda del torneo.

Stephens, número 50 del ranking, enfrentará en dicha fase a Caroline Garcia, con la que ha jugado en cinco ocasiones, con cuatro triunfos para la francesa, incluidos los últimos tres, el más reciente el año pasado en Cincinnati.

Guadalajara, Jalisco, October 19th, 2022.- American Sloane Stephens knows very well the courts of the Complejo Panamericano de Tenis and she showed it once again taking down Swiss Belinda Bencic to qualify for the round of 16 of the GDL Open Akron 1000 where she will take on Caroline García, from France.

In one of the prime time matches on Wednesday in Estadio Akron, Stephens defeated Bencic 6-4 and 6-4 in 1:29 and qualified to the round of 16 of the tournament that is being played on Mexican soil for the first time.

Both players had a break each at the start of the match that has evenly played, but Stephens got her second break of the match in the seventh game to take a 4-3 lead.
The American player who just a few months won the title of the Abierto Akron Zapopan, played in the same courts, hold her serve and with precise shots won the first set against a though opponent who also had support from the fans.

In the second set things appeared to start to get better for Stephens, who got ahead with a break, but the Swiss reacted and tied the match and looked motivated and she even nailed a drop shot that the fans cheered.

The match was even, but in the seventh game Bencic made a double fault and Stephens got the break and the won the eight and secured her spot in the third round.


Stephens, who is ranked 50th, will play against Caroline Garcia, whom she has faced five times, with four wins for the Frenchwoman, including the last three, the most recent in Cincinati.
