Guadalajara, Jalisco, 23 de octubre 2022.- La dupla australiana-brasileña conformada por Storm Sanders y Luisa Stefani enfrentará esta noche a Beatriz Haddad Maia (también de Brasil) y Anna Danilina de Kazajistán en la final de dobles del GDL Open Akron. Las ganadoras pasarán a la historia como las primeras campeonas del primer torneo 1000 en América Latina.
Sanders y Stefani protagonizaron un emocionante duelo contra las chinas Zhaoxuan Yang y Xu Yifan, octavas preclasificadas del último WTA 1000 del año, en tres sets con marcador de 7-5 4-6 y 10-5 en el super tie break, el cual concretaron en 1 hora 42 minutos de partido.
Las finalistas llegaron a Guadalajara sin preclasificación y quitaron de su camino a las italianas Martina Trevisan y Elisabetha Cocciaretto, a Nicole Melichar y Ellen Perez en segunda ronda y por la no comparecencia de sus rivales Elise Mertens y Veronika Kudermetova se colocaron en la semifinal.
A pesar de que la preferencia de los asistentes al estadio Akron se inclinaba hacia la pareja oriental, Sanders y Stefani no se dejaron intimidar con las porras y dieron lo mejor de ellas en el encuentro.
Este es apenas el segundo torneo en el que participan juntas Sanders y Stefani, ya que la semana pasada lo hicieron en San Diego, donde llegaron a cuartos de final. Ambas tienen cuatro títulos WTA en su carrera con parejas diferentes. Sanders viene de ganar el dobles Mixto con con su compatriota John Peers en el Abierto de Estados Unidos.
Sanders and Stefani vie for the title of the first WTA 1000 in Latin America
Guadalajara, Jalisco, October 23, 2022.- The Australian-Brazilian couple of Storm Sanders and Luis Stefani will meet tonight against Beatriz Haddad Maia, also from Brazil, and Kazakh Anna Danilina in the double’s finals of the GDL Open Akron.
The winners will go down as the first champions of a Latin-American WTA 1000.
Sanders and Stefani won a thrilling match over the eighth-seeded couple of Zhaoxuan Yang y Xu Yifan, both from China, in the last WTA 1000 of the season. They needed a super tiebreak to win 7-5 4-6 y 10-5 in 1:42 hours.
The finalists arrived unseeded to Guadalajara and defeated Italians Martina Trevisan and Elisabetha Cocciaretto in the first round; Nicole Melichar and Ellen Perez in the second round; and won by walkover against Elise Mertens and Veronika Kudermetova on their way to the final.
Although the Chinese couple seemed to be the favorite of the fans at Estadio Akron, Sanders and Stefani didn’t lose their focus and determination.
This is only the second event in which Sanders and Stefani team up, after also playing together last week in San Diego, where they made quarterfinals. Each one has four career WTA titles, but with different couples.
Sanders just won the mixed doubles title at the U.S. Open alongside fellow American John Peers.
