Sakkari aprende a ser buena consigo misma
Guadalajara, Jalisco, 18 de octubre de 2022.- Para algunas personas llegar a estar entre los mejores del mundo es un gran anhelo. Trabajan día a día para ello, pero cuando alcanzan el objetivo, no lo gozan como lo habían imaginado. Algo parecido le ocurrió a la griega Maria Sakkari, quien se encuentra en Guadalajara para disputar el último certamen WTA 1000 de la temporada.
En un ejercicio de honestidad, Sakkari admitió hace un par de meses que no estaba disfrutando tanto ubicarse entre las mejores del mundo. Tal vez por ello menciona que su mayor aprendizaje a lo largo de estos años es que no debe exigirse tanto. “Creo que no hay que poner demasiada presión como hice este año, felicitarme por muchas cosas que he logrado y tratar de ser tan agradable como pueda”. Se refiere a ser amable consigo misma y entender que siempre habrá altibajos.
De la mano va tener claro que la palabra éxito puede tener diferentes significados. “Para mí el éxito es muchas cosas, tiene que ver con las emociones, todo en lo que encuentro satisfacción, cuando gano un gran partido, o estoy en una etapa final en un torneo, pero también ser feliz y buena conmigo misma”, comentó.
El año pasado fue histórico para la griega, quien ganó el derecho de jugar las WTA Finals, que se realizaron en la Perla Tapatía, por colocarse entre las ocho mejores del mundo. Terminó la temporada en el sitio seis del ranking de la WTA, convirtiéndose en la primera jugadora de su país en alcanzar el top ten. También fue la primera griega que clasifica a las WTA Finals (llegó a semifinales), alcanzó su tercera final de un certamen WTA y llegó a las semifinales de Roland Garros y el Abierto de Estados Unidos, dejando a su paso a tres top 20 en ambos eventos. Además se anotó el mayor número de triunfos sobre jugadoras top 10 (9).
Curiosamente, no cosechó algún título, aunque el crecimiento que ha tenido es evidente, porque mantenerse en el top ten es un logro. Maria analiza los principales cambios que ve entre la jugadora que es hoy y la de hace unos años. “Creo que el principal cambio es la consistencia, creer, ser más valiente muchas veces dentro de la cancha y tratar de ir por las cosas que no iba antes”, explica Sakkari.
Maria va por un gran cierre de la temporada que le permita disputar por segundo año consecutivo las WTA Finals, lo que logrará si hoy vence en su duelo de segunda ronda a la ucraniana Marta Kostyuk.

Sakkari learns to be kind to herself
Guadalajara, Jalisco, October 18th 2022.- For some players, being considered among the best is just a desire. They work every day towards that goal, but once they reach it, they don’t enjoy it like they would’ve thought. Maria Sakkari, who is in Guadalajara for the last WTA 1000 of the season, went through something similar.
During a sincerity outburst, Sakkari conceded a couple of months ago that she wasn’t enjoying being among the best. Maybe that’s one of the reasons she says that her biggest lesson thus far is not to push herself that much.
“I think I shouldn’t pressure myself that much as I did this year. Congratulate myself for what I’ve achieved and try and be as nice as I can”. She was talking about being kind to herself and understand that there will always be ups and downs.
It also involves understanding that the word “success” can have different meanings.
“Personally, success is a lot of things, it is related with emotions, everything I find satisfying, when I win a match or I’m at the final rounds of a tournament. But it also involves being nice and kind with myself”, she said.
Last year, the Greek player had a breakthrough, earning her place in the WTA Finals in Guadalajara, as one of the Top 8 players in the world. She finished the season in the 6th place in the rankings and became the first Greek woman to reach the Top 10.
She was also the first Greek woman to play in the WTA Finals, making the semifinals, she played in her third final at the WTA level, and made semis in both Roland Garros and the U.S. Open, beating three Top 20 players along the way in both events. In addition, she also finished the season with the most wins against Top 10 players, with nine.
Odd enough she didn’t win any titles, but her growth is there for the world to see, since staying in the Top 10 is an achievement by itself.
Maria analyses de changes she’s being seeing through the years.
“I think the main thing is consistency, belief, being braver in the court and just trying to go get some things I wasn’t going for”, she explains.
Sakkari is eyeing to finish the season in a good note that allows her to play in the WTA finals for the second year in a row. She can achieve that goal by beating Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk in her second-round match later today.
