Pegula pisa fuerte y va a semis
Guadalajara, Jalisco, 21 de octubre 2022.- La estadounidense Jessica Pegula se colocó en la ronda de las cuatro mejores, después de vencer a su compatriota Sloane Stephens por un fácil 6-2 y 6-2 y mantenerse en búsqueda de su primer título del año.
Jessica, tercera en la siembra del GDL Open Akron 1000, se apuntó su tercera victoria en enfrentamientos contra Sloane, siempre en sets corridos y 39 en el año, superando las 36 de 2021.
Stephens jugaba sus primeros cuartos de final en torneos 1000 desde Madrid 2019, pero no encontró la manera de frenar el buen paso de su oponente. En sus cinco anteriores partidos contra rivales top 5, tampoco pudo salir avante. Además, puso su récord en duelos contra compatriotas en 32-25 (1-3 en 2022).
Pegula busca igualar su mejor resultado de esta temporada en WTA 1000, ya que en Madrid fue finalista.
Jessica dominó de principio a fin a Sloane, quien no encontró el ritmo y tuvo problemas para ganar puntos con su primer servicio, apenas el 47.5 por ciento. El partido tuvo peloteos cortos, con apenas dos tiros ganadores para Stephens en el primer parcial, por cuatro de Pegula, quien en 31 minutos no desaprovechó un doble match point. En ese set Stephens acumuló 19 errores no fotrzados; Pegula, 12.
Una pensativa Stephens parecía tratar de descifrar el juego de su compatriota durante el descanso.
Pero en el comienzo del segundo set, salvó tres puntos de quiebre, pero no pudo con el cuarto y Jessica tomó una rápida ventaja. Pero en los dos siguientes games intercambiaron rompimientos y Pegula definió el rumbo del encuentro con un nuevo quiebre en el séptimo juego.
Fue todo para Stephens, quien en febrero levantaba en estas instalaciones el título del Abierto de Zapopan (WTA 250).
En las semifinales Pegula enfrentará a la bielorrusa Victoria Azarenka, ante quien tiene récord de 1-2 en duelos directos. “Va a ser un partido muy difícil”, reconoció Pegula, respecto al partido de mañana

Guadalajara, Jalisco, October 21, 2022.- Jessica Pegula moved one step closer to the final of the GDL Open Akron 1000 after cruising past fellow American Sloane Stephens 6-2, 6-2 in her quest for her first title of the year.
The third-seeded Pegula scored her third career win against Stephens, always in straight sets, and number 39 of the year, surpassing her career-best 36 of 2021.
Stephens was playing her first quarterfinals at the WTA 1000 level since Madrid 2019, but she was no match for Pegula. She lost her sixth straight against top 5 players and is 32-25 against American players over her career and 1-3 in 2022.
Pegula is aiming for her best result of the season at a 1000 event after being runner-up in Madrid.
On Friday it was all Pegula. Sloane couldn’t find her rhythm and struggled with her first serve, hitting just 47.5%. The points were short, and Sloane had only two winners against four of her rival, who needed just 31 minutes to convert a double set point.
Stephens finished the first set with 19 unforced errors while Pegula had 12.
During the break Stephens looked for ways to decipher her rival to no avail.
She saved three break points to begin the second set, but she finally faltered on the fourth handling Pegula an early lead. They traded breaks over the next two games, but Pegula broke her rival’s service once again on the seventh game.
That was it for Stephens, who just las February won the title of the Abierto Zapopan (WTA 250) on the very same court.
Pegula will go for a place in the final against Belarus Victoria Azarenka, who has beaten her in two of their previous three matches.
“It’s going to be a tough match”, conceded Pegula.
