Caroline Garcia, suffers, but makes it to the third round

Guadalajara, Jalisco, October 18th 2022.- Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia needed a comeback to overcome Canadian Rebeca Marino, who dazzled with her serve in the first serve and fought until the end, but the 10th player in the world was the one who qualified for the third round of the Open Akron 1000.

Caroline Garcia, the sixth seed in the Mexican tournament, won it 6-7 (2), 6-3 y 7-6 (5), in the closing match of the second round at estadio Akron from the Complejo Panamericano de Tenis.

Solid with her serve, Marino was the best player in the first set. She finished it with 15 aces while Garcia had five and with 90% on points on the first serve. They both defended well their serves but the Canadian was closer to a break to take the first set but missed her chance and they went to the tie-break.

Garcia got the first mini break of the sudden death and took a 2-1 lead, but the next six points where for Marino, who was coming from the qualification, and she took the first set against a visibly upset and frustrated Garcia.

The Frenchwoman started better on the second set and Marino could not sustain her level of the first one. She was only able to hit four aces and suffered a break enough for Garcia to take a 5-3 lead and then she held her serve to send the match to the third set.

Caroline Garcia, who earlier this year won titles in Bad Homburg, Warsaw, and Cincinnati, started better on the third set, and quickly pulled ahead with a break in the third game. Her looks were very different compared to the ones at the end of the first set, she looked relaxed with a 3-1 lead.

Caroline just needed to hold her serve, but she found herself facing an opponent who made things hard for her because she got the break back to tie the game and extended the emotions at estadio Akron. With Marino ahead 6-5, the Frenchwoman required medical attention with her shoulder bothering her, but she returned to the court to force the tie-break where she took a 3-0 lead and even though Marino inched closer dangerously, Garcia took the final set.

With the win in her debut in the GDL Open Akron 1000 Garcia moved on to the third round where she will play the winner of the match between Belinda Bencic, the tenth seed, and American Sloane Stephens.
